Can religious men ejaculate?

There are several options for religious men to provide a sperm sample for analysis. The two most common methods are PCT (from the woman's body) and the "halachic" condom.

  • PCT (post coital test): following intercourse, the woman stands immediately after ejaculation and collects the seminal fluid that spilled out into a sterile cup.
  • The "halachic" condom: a condom that either does not contain spermicide, or one that contains a microscopic hole at the end (to not violate the law prohibiting the waste or destruction of sperm). Following intercourse and ejaculation, the condom is tied and placed into a sterile cup.

How do you bring the sample to the lab?

After ejaculation, it is important to ensure that the sterile cup is tightly sealed. Additionally, the patient's name, ID number, and time of release should be written on the outside in permanent marker. The cup should be concealed in a paper or bag and brought to the laboratory for analysis within about an hour at room temperature (without heating or cooling).

How is sperm quality determined?

The analysis is done according to the Kruger method, where the quality of sperm is determined according to 6 parameters: volume, acidity (pH), viscosity, number of leukocytes (white blood cells), concentration, and movement of sperm cells. Additionally, the analysis also includes an examination of the morphology (shape) of the cells- the shape of the heads, necks, and tails of the sperm as compared to normal.

How soon will you get results?

Results are sent via email within 2 business days. In a private sperm analysis, the patient is fully present in the laboratory during time of analysis and results are received and explained to the patient within 30 minutes (private sperm analysis is subject to a fee). In either case, you are responsible for forwarding your results to the physician overseeing your care.

What happens is there is an abnormality in the results?

Sperm flow is always changing and there are many factors that may affect a sperm sample. If the results are not normal, a follow-up sperm analysis should be done about a month after the previous sperm analysis, or according to the instructions of a healthcare professional.
